I laid out a layer of burnt sienna paint. I painted this in my living room, at home. I pulled up lighter colors by using mineral spirits and a rag. I used an exercise taken from Sam Marshall's book, "Linocut: Creative Guide to Making Beautiful Prints." The goal was to capture your most used tool. I started out with a drawing I made of my packing knife, transferred it to the linoleum, and made subsequent carvings. This work has six layers of color in it. I lead my son's kindergarten class "the Sharks" through a salt crystal and watercolor art session. Each child left with their own small watercolor piece. Everyone came together to paint the larger background piece. I designed and cut out the shark overlay (with the 12 sharks, one for each of the kids in the class) and framed it for the school's auction. I'm happy to say that it sold!
